Sustainability as natural balance: the vineyard linked to the landscape is the soul of Otazu. As the most northern D.O.P. Pago in Spain, we know that our existence depends on the balance of the ecosystem that surrounds us. We care for the whole territory under one non-negotiable premise: leaving the next generation a more living soil and a stronger environment than the one we received.
Caring for the whole
16.8% of the estate is natural environment: native woodland and scrub, hedgerows, field margins and flowering covers. That is where the birds, the pollinators and the insects that keep the vineyard in balance live.
That figure comes from a biodiversity study carried out by the Fundación Global Nature. The estate is also surrounded by oak groves that act as a refuge for wildlife and as the green lung of the place. And there is a practical consequence: the more life there is around the vine, the less need there is to intervene.
The Otazu path
The first plant covers between the rows were sown in 1996. Soil management has followed that direction ever since: less tillage, more organic matter and a cover that holds the ground together.
The photovoltaic panels came on line in 2024 and energy consumption fell by 17% compared with 2022. The Ozu bottle weighs 26% less and is made with 84% recycled glass; its boxes carry 69% recycled material. In 2025 we began trialling Latxa sheep wool mulch, which returns a by-product of the Navarrese livestock sector to the vineyard.
