More than 150 works of art where the wine is born

The Otazu Foundation was born in 2016 with the aim of managing and directing the activities of the art centre located in Otazu, Navarra. It is responsible for preserving and exhibiting one of the largest contemporary art collections in Spain within a singular setting steeped in history and which, in turn, proposes a rich programme of artistic activities.

The Foundation lays the foundations of an artistic mission at the service of society and the environment, with the aim of boosting this dynamic inertia, creating value from reflection on the sustainability equation with the environment and artistic creation as one of the engines of social innovation.

The collection

The Otazu Foundation develops a wide-ranging artistic and curatorial programme around the creation, conservation, research and dissemination of its contemporary art collection.

Its activity incorporates a clear educational and mediation dimension, with programmes aimed at diverse audiences. Alongside the organisation of exhibitions and curatorial projects, the Foundation promotes the loan of works from its collection to museums and art centres for participation in national and international exhibitions, thus contributing to widening the visibility and recognition of the represented artists.

In 2020, the Otazu Foundation received the "A" Award for Collecting at ARCO, considered the highest recognition of private collecting in Spain.

The artists

Art that can only be understood here

More than three decades of collaborations that have transformed Otazu into one of the most singular art and wine projects in the world.

Otazu’s bond with artists extends across the whole territory. Manolo Valdés inaugurated it with Ariadna, the monumental sculpture that became the image of the Otazu range. Xavier Mascaró came later with his Guardians, iron pieces that oxidise in the open air and change over time, like wine. Alfredo Jaar, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Asier Mendizabal or Héctor Zamora: each has left a permanent mark on the landscape.

The collaborations take many forms: labels conceived as graphic works, site-specific installations in the vineyard, performances held during the Art Weekends and sculptures created for the Monumental Sculpture Biennial, which become permanently integrated into the landscape. Added to this is Genios, a project in which artist and winemaker work together from the harvest to the final conception of the bottle.
